September 2009 – Vascular surgeon Dr. Xavier Cannella has been named Medical Director of the Wound Healing Institute at University Community Hospital. This is a new, state-of-the-art facility, specializing in difficult to heal wounds, opening in January.
The facility includes four hyperbaric oxygen chambers, which provide concentrated oxygen to increase the body’s healing and immune responses. Other treatments include synthetic and live skin grafting, cell growth factor therapy, compression therapy, debridement and other advanced modalities.
“Nearly 5 million Americans suffer from non-healing wounds, which require specialized treatment,” said Cannella. “We’ve had great success in healing these wounds.” Some of the most common chronic wounds start from pressure sores, spider bites, trauma, vascular insufficiency, infection, and disease. “We’ve treated patients ranging from motorcycle accidents to confined patients with pressure ulcers, all with good outcomes,” Cannella explained.
